Q. I'm looking for information on crime at UHD.

Specifically, I'm looking for: 1. Crime statistics for UHD compared to other universities 2. History of crimes in the past 10 years 3. Safety measures that have been implemented 4. Have these crimes been resolved? 5. What type of person has been affected most by them? 6. Has the crime rate improved?

Answer

The UHD Police Department site has three links here than can help you find information on your topic: 1) the Annual  Security Report; 2) Crime Statistics with information about crimes and arrest by UHD Police Department. The statistics go back three years. To go back further than three years you will need to contact the Police Department; 3) Crime Log.

You might also want to look at crime stats around UHD – see http://www.houstontx.gov/police/cs/stats2.htm Houston Neighborhood Crime Statistics.

A federal law called the Clery Act governs how college campuses report crimes. If you want to find out more about it and some other information about campus crime, you could search for “Clery Act” in the periodical database Academic Search Complete, available here: https://library.uhd.edu/az.php?a=a.

Another way to get comparative data is by using Campus Data and Security from U.S. Department of Education. Here you can enter information such as the name of an institution and retrieve crime statistics for that institution. Try the tool Compare Data for Multiple Schools.

A good way to approach the issue is by doing general research on the subject and applying what you learn to UHD. A good place to start research regarding crime is on our Criminal Justice library guide found here: http://library.uhd.edu/cj. Choose a database and search terms like:

campus AND crime

universities AND crime

campus AND victim

For information on the victims of crimes, try starting at the Criminal Justice library guide and choose the tab for Websites and Statistics. From here choose the “Crime & Victims” link from the Sources by Topic box. There are links here to National Crime and Victimization Studies that may of use to you here.

If you have further questions not answered by the sources above, try contacting the UHD Police Chief: https://www.uhd.edu/police-department/Pages/pd-Contactus.aspx
