Q. I am currently doing research on the Tokyo Stock Exchange. I need a list of all of the ticker symbols of the companies

I am a Lecturer at UHD. I am currently doing research on the Tokyo Stock Exchange. I need a list of all of the ticker symbols of the companies that are traded on this exchange. Do you know where I could find this information? Thanks.
The following is the Tokyo Stock Exchange website: http://www.jpx.co.jp/english/

Answer

The Library makes a database available that looks like it should allow you to get at least some of this information. It's called Mergent Online. To get to it, go to our Company and Industry Resources guide at http://library.uhd.edu/companyindustry. Select Mergent Online from the middle column box.

When you get into the database, look in the right column and you'll see a drop-down box for exchange. Scroll down and you'll see 3 listings for Tokyo. Select Tokyo (1st section) -- I checked, and nothing comes up under the other two listings. Then click on the Search button.

When I did it, I got a list of over 2200 companies. When you click on the link in the upper right corner for Excel download, it will create a file that includes the tickers, which I guess in this case are actually code numbers.

If you need the lists from other sections of the Tokyo Exchange, it looks like you can find them on the Exchange web site, under Listed Company Search, by selecting choices under "Market Division." However, I don't see an option for output to Excel there.
