I am looking for statistics for the number of houses sold in the Houston area for the past ten years.

One source for these statistics is the Houston Association of Realtors.
They publish annual statistics each year in their January press release:
1. Start with their press release archive at http://web.har.com/mls/dispPressRelease.cfm.
2. Use the left-side menu to browse press releases for each year by month.
3. Look at the January release for each year and find the section labeled “Annual Market Comparison.”
4. These statistics will show single family home sales, total property sales, total dollar volumes, and average/median prices for two previous years.
