Q. My group is researching the feasibility of Merck conducting business in Pakistan.
I recommend a library database called MarketLine Advantage. You can find it on the International Business Guide.
Look under the “Country Resources” tab, and MarketLine Advantage will be listed on that page. Go into the database and type in Pakistan then hit Search. On the next page, click on the blue button at the top of the resulting page for “Countries.” You’ll get to the report on Pakistan, which will be useful. The PESTLE report usually has a pretty good overview of the county’s economy.
Also, when you’re in the Pakistan report, there will be a link on the right side that says “Companies.” You can use this to see major companies in Pakistan. Click on it, then on the resulting brief page, click on “More” at the bottom. On the right of the page, there should be a section that says “By Industry,” and you can choose “Pharmaceuticals and Healthcare.” You’ll get a list of 9 companies, which doesn’t include Merck. Also, you can look up a company report on Merck by entering “Merck” in the top right corner in the new search box. It bears out the fact that apparently, Merck doesn’t already operate there. It will show you that Merck does operate in India. All this will give you information about potential competitors to Merck in Pakistan.
Other good, credible sources to use for information on Pakistan, listed on the Country Resources page: CIA World Factbook, Countrywatch, Country Reports on Human Rights Practices, Doing Business: Benchmarking Business Regulations, and Global Road Warrior.
Another good source to use for information on Merck is Hoover’s. You’ll get a company profile there, too.
