I'm looking for information on charter schools and their stance on LGBT.
Answer
A good place to start research on LGBT topics is our library guide for Gender Studies found at http://library.uhd.edu/genderstudies. On the guide’s homepage, there are several databases listed including Gender Studies Database and LGBTQ+ Source. Try searching in LGBTQ+ Source for
“sexual minority” AND “charter schools”
" sexual minority " AND “Schools”
“sexual minority” AND “youth”
Once you are looking at the results page, check in the column on the left side under the heading SUBJECT. Clicking on subject will give you a list of topics included in the database you might also try searching.
I’m not sure how much information you will find specifically about charter schools classification of LGBT as a minority, but you may be able to find information about LGBT in charter schools or general information about LGBT in schools.
Another approach when using LGBT Life is to search the phrase “homophobia in schools” as a subject (change the Select a Field optional drop down menu to SU Subject Terms) for information about homophobia in schools. “Gay Students” is another term you may find useful in you research.
If you click on the tab for Websites and Organizations in the Gender Studies guide, you will see several for LGBT in the left corner. Try browsing through these websites for information on your topic and/or contacting someone within the organization about the issue. Browsing through the literature published on the organization's website may give you some ideas on how to expand your topic as well.
