Q. How do I use the Library Catalog?

Answer

Use the UHD Library Catalog to find print, electronic, and audio-visual materials owned by the UHD W.I. Dykes Library, as well as libraries at the University of Houston and the University of Houston-Clear Lake. UHD students, faculty, staff, and alumni can borrow library materials at any of these libraries using their UHD ID card.

The UHD Library Catalog can be accessed on the Library homepage:

There are several ways to search the library catalog:

  • Use the keyword or subject searches to find items on a topic.
  • Use the author search to find books written by a particular author.
  • Use the title search if you know the exact title of the item you need.
  • Use the journal title search if you know the exact name of a journal, magazine, or newspaper.

In the Advanced Search, there are options to limit your search by location, material type, language, or year.

To retrieve a detailed catalog record of a desired item, click on the title of the item from the results screen display.

For a print item, look for the location and call number:

To find a print item, locate the item by finding the corresponding call number on the shelf. The ends of the shelves all have call number ranges. For instance if the item your looking for has a call number of PS613 .P47 it would be on a shelf with a call number range of PS1-PS1000 because 613 is between 1 and 1,000 and it is in the PS section of the shelves.

For an electronic item, look for the "UHD users only" link:

The "UHD users only" link will connect you to the full-text of the eBook. Log in using your UHD network ID and password, if prompted. For more information on eBooks at UHD, see the eBooks in the Library Research Guide.

Use the Request link to request delivery of books from the UH or UHCL libraries to the UHD Library Circulation Desk.
