How do I broaden a keyword search in the Library Catalog?

Answer

  • Start on the library homepage and select the Catalog tab on the left in the middle of the page. Choose Advanced Search.
  • The pull down triangle to the left of the search line allows you to combine terms with "And", "Or", and "Not." To narrow your search, you can use any of the options listed below. To broaden your search, choose "Or." "Or" will search for items that contain at least one of your search terms. For example: cats or dogs would find items for cats, dogs, and cats and dogs.
  • A "wildcard" is a symbol used to stand in for other characters. The asterisk (*) matches any number of characters. Searching for "therap*" will find "therapeutic", "therapies", "therapist", "therapy", etc. You must type at least two charactes before the asterisk.
  • Question Mark (?) - Stands for one letter anywhere in a word. Searching for "wom?n" will find "woman" and "women."
