I am having issues locating an industry code.

The industry I would like to research is Real Estate. I'm looking into buying/selling and building homes. Once I get the code, how do I research external environment analysis of the industry?

Answer

I would start with the library’s business research guide: http://library.uhd.edu/business

Click on the tab that says “Company and Industry Resources.”  I would start with “Mergent Intellect.” You can search by SIC, NAICS or keyword.  Since you do not know the NAICS, try searching “Real Estate.”  There are several different industries listed under “Real Estate,” so I’ll leave it to you to narrow down which one you want to use.  Once you have narrowed it down, you’ll find a fairly lengthy industry report.  The NAICS will be included at the top of the report.  To navigate the report, you can either scroll down or you can skip to specific sections using the links located on the left.

Other resources that you might consider:

You might be able to find more information about individual companies Valueline and Mergent Online.  Both are great resources for comparing competing companies and obtaining current financial information.  This would also be a good place to find additional companies in your industry if the five forces report doesn’t provide enough.  Other resources you might try are ABI/Inform and Business Source Complete.  Both databases allow you to search by keyword, NAICS or company name.  They include news articles, reports, and journal articles.
