To start out, we have a book, titled “Newjack” by Ted Conover. It is the story of a year he spent working as a prison guard in Sing Sing. He talks about the prisoners, yes, but he also talks about being part of the prison guard subculture. To read this book, start at the library home page, http://www.uhd.edu/library, select the Catalog tab,  and type the word “newjack” into the search box in the middle of the screen. Write down the call number and come to the library and we can show you where to find it.

We also have some other books that might help you. If you start at that search box again, and search for “correctional personnel” it will pull up a list of books from all of the UH libraries. You’ll see from the titles that some of them aren’t really about what you want, like the books on legal issues, but some of them are about different aspects of prison officer culture.

We can do the same sort of thing to find you some articles about this topic. Start at the library homepage, and look on the left, where you’ll click on “Research Guides”, then “Guides by Subject”. Click on “Criminal Justice”. This gives you a list of our criminal justice databases, which are online search tools that let you find articles on a particular subject. Click on one, log in, and then in the first search box put:

Click on the “full text” check box that’s about halfway down the page and to the right. This will give you only the articles that you can read the whole thing, the “full text”, right away on your computer.

When you get a list of results, you can click on each title to see a little more about each article, to see if it’s got anything in it that will help you. If it does, and you want to read it, click on one of the links that says “full text”. From there you can print out or save or email each article.
