Q. I am looking for information on a company’s competitors, local and international.
I recommend that you start with our Company and Industry Resources page. Go to the Business Research Guide here: http://library.uhd.edu/business. Next, select the Company and Industry Resources tab near the top of the page. Three databases from this page are most likely to be helpful in identifying competitors:
Hoover’s, Mergent Horizon, and Reference USA Business Database.
In Hoover’s and Mergent Horizon search for your company. Hoover’s covers both public and private companies. Mergent covers only public companies. When you find the record for your company, look for the “Competitors” option. In both Hoover's and Mergent, it is one of the tabs across the top of the company view screen.
Reference USA Business Database can be helpful for finding local competitors. Start by searching for your company, limiting to the particular location you want to focus on (e.g., Houston). If you are looking at a company with many branches or chain stores, search for a branch or store located in the city you want to search. From the results screen, click on the branch or store name to view the full record. Then look for the “Radius Search” option. Enter a number of miles for the radius, i.e., 30 miles. Then click on the “Find Similar” link next to the “Radius Search” box. This option will show you similar businesses within a 30-mile radius of the business you selected.
