Q. I am researching the history of clothing in 18th century France.

Answer

Start with two databases: OMNIFILE and HISTORICAL ABSTRACTS. You will find them under the Databases tab on the UHD Library home page. In OMNIFILE, try this search:

(clothing or fashion or costume) AND france AND "eighteenth century"

In HISTORICAL ABSTRACTS, try this search:

(clothing or fashion or costume) AND france

Before you start the search, go to the “limit your results” section below the search box. Change the language to English. Then, under “Historical Period from”, put 1700 in the first box and 1799 in the second box. Then start your search.

You may also try Libsearch, the search box on the library's home page. It's a Google-like way to search our library’s collection. Use the same keywords.

ENCYCLOPEDIA OF CLOTHING AND FASHION is a good source of information on your topic. Start with the index at http://library.uh.edu/record=b6905907~S14. Look at the entries under “Eighteenth Century.” Entries such as “neoclassicism,” “court
dress,” “European dress,” etc., will have information about French clothing during the eighteenth century with lists of books and articles to consult for further information.

You may also find a lot of material in books. Start with the library catalog at http://library.uh.edu/search~S14/X. Search for:

clothing and dress history

clothing and dress history eighteenth century
