I am looking for statistics on the Chinese population in America.

I want to look at statistics from when the immigrants first came to America. Then I need to break it down to Texas, Harris County, Houston.

This article from the Handbook of Texas will help you define the years you may need to search for historical data on Chinese in Texas:

Some useful data can be found in census records at the U.S. Census Bureau website. Try these steps:

1. Go back to
2. Choose #32 (Historical Census Statistics on Population Totals by Race, 1790 to 1990) 6. Choose “Texas”
Find “Houston”
(Note: this data is more general than the national, regional, and state data, so you will only find data on “Asians and Pacific Islanders,” rather than “Chinese.” More specific data would require a special analysis of the original census returns).

Another way to get county-level data is to use the Historical Census Browser from the University of Virginia. This tool lets you do analyses of original census data. Try these steps:

1. Choose “Ethnicity / Race / Place of Birth”
2. Choose "PERSONS BORN IN CHINA (1870—1900) 3. Select “Texas”
4. Select “Retrieve County-Level Data”

If you need more recent statistics, see the U.S. Census Bureau’s American FactFinder website at
Then try these steps:

1. Choose “Fact Sheet”
2. Choose “Fact Sheet for a Race, Ethnic, or Ancestry Group”
3. Choose “Chinese alone”
4. Click “Go”
5. The initial data will take a long time to load. The first page will show you data for the United States. Then you can use the boxes at the top of the data to focus by state, city, county, or zip code. All data is from the 2000 Census.
