Q

What is a good resource for scientific reviews for non-scientists?

Reviews on environmental science (topics such as climate change, green technology, toxic waste, water shortage, and e-waste) for the lay public would be really helpful. Can you suggest some resources that are accessible online? (I’m thinking along the lines of Annual Review of Ecology for non-scientists.)

Answer

The library has a research guide on environmental science with links to several good resources to find information. That guide can be found here: http://library.uhd.edu/environmental. The tab ‘On the Web’ has several links to resources that are not as science based and more written for the lay person.

Another place that you can start is a database called Environment Complete; this will allow you to search within multiple journals dealing with environmental topics at once. To get to Environment Complete go to the library home page http://www.uhd.edu/library/, select the blue ‘Databases’ tab, select the letter ‘E’, then scroll down until you see it listed in the alphabetical list (third to last) and click on it.

The Pew Center on Global Climate Change is a good resource on many various environmental topics that are written for the layperson. http://www.pewclimate.org. They have a news page with links to speeches and articles and other various resources. http://www.pewclimate.org/press_room/sub_press_room.

Some other suggested journals that you can access through the library’s home page using the ‘Journals’ tab are:
Environment
Ecology and society
Conservation & Society
Conservation Biology
Conservation in Practice
Ecological Management & Restoration
