One good place to start would be by seeking the assistance and advice of fellow authors. There are several “Writers’ Clubs” in town, with members that can give you practical advice on publishing. Several also host writing clinics and workshops where peers review work and give suggestions. The following is a short list:

CLMP directory of literary magazines (this lists most American literary magazines that exist and includes contact info)

https://www.clmp.org/directory/

Houston Writers Guild
http://www.houstonwritersguild.org/

Bay Area Writers League
http://www.meetup.com/writers-525/

Clear Lake Area Writers
http://clearlakeareawriters.blogspot.com/

White Oak Writers of Houston
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/whiteoakwriters/

Woodlands Writers Guild
http://woodlandswritersguild.org/

Also, there are a number of books on authorship in the W.I. Dykes Library Collection. To find these, go to the library catalog -https://www.uhd.edu/library/Pages/library-index.aspx and click the UHD Icon - and in a new search select "SUBJECT" and enter Authorship in the text box and click search.

If you have an interest in writing short fiction for contest or serialization, below are a few of the better known resources:

National Novel Writing Month

NPR Three-Minute Fiction

Finally, you may consider reviewing some of the journals and magazines geared towards authors. Publishers Weekly is a good one to start with, containing articles geared towards publishers and authors. Publishers Weekly is available through several library databases and the library also subscribes to the hardcopy journal - available in the periodicals section, South-5.
