Q

For my team project we are to assume the role of management consultants for a small to medium sized Texas-based company.

My group has chosen Niko Niko's, a Greek restaurant. On the basis of an analysis of the present situation and emerging trends, our objective is to chart or recommend a future direction for our chosen enterprise. I need to research the external environment, analyses, and evaluation of major external environmental components. This includes the General Environment Analysis and Industry Analysis.

Begin by going to the Library’s  Business Guide: http://library.uhd.edu/business

Click on the tab that says “Company and Industry resources”.  Start with “Reference USA,” located in the middle box.  Reference USA will provide you with basic information about the company, such as annual sales and the number of people employed.  You can also find out the company’s primary industry codes.  From this page we can tell the Niko Niko’s is listed as SIC: 5812 and NAICS: 72231009.

Next try searching Hoover’s online, also located in the middle box.  Hoover’s allows you to create custom reports.  In the box labeled “Build A List”, select “city” from the top drop-down menu.  Type “Houston” in the box next to the drop-down.  Next, select SIC and type “5812” in the box.  This will give you a list of most of the restaurants in Houston.  You can also limit your search to annual sales and the number of employees.  Limiting your search this way will give you a better idea of comparable companies. Another database, "Mergent Online," provides a similar report.  If you use Mergent though, I would advise you to click on the “Advanced Search” tab and click on “D&B Private Company Search”.  This will allow you to search smaller businesses in the Houston area.  This would also allow you to limit your search to just restaurants with the same zip code as Niko Niko’s.

The next resource I recommend is “First Research” located in the first box.  First Research will provide you with a general industry report.  It is not localized, but it will give you valuable information about the industry as a whole.  You can also get a general industry report in “MarketLine Advantage”, also located in the first box.  To access the report in MarketLine Advantage, type “restaurant” in the search box.  Next, locate the pink tab at the top labeled “Industry”.  Then locate “North America” on the right side of the page.  You should see a report for “United States-Hotels, Restaurants & Cafes”.  Click on the title, then click on the PDF next to “downloads”.
