Q

My research topic is ABA (Applied Behavior Analysis) therapy vs. alternative treatments for children with ASD (Autism Spectrum Disorder).

How can I search the library databases for scholarly journal articles, books, and interviews with therapists and parents/guardians.

Answer

A great place to start would be the library research guide for psychology found here: http://library.uhd.edu/psychology.  It is a compilation of some of the best resources for getting valid and accurate information on a given topic including scholarly journals, books, video, and statistics resources.  Another  resource you might use in addition to the ones you’ve already identified is video.  This link is to a list of videos in the UHD library pertaining to autism and therapy: http://library.uh.edu/search~S14/X?SEARCH=%28autism%20therapy%29&searchscope=14&SORT=D&m=n.  The library also has a database called Films on Demand (under the Films/Video tab on the research guide) that has streaming education videos on a variety of topics including autism.  The videos range from short clips to full length films.

I did a general search for “autism” in PsychArticles (an Ebsco database).  If you look to the column on the left of the results page, you’ll see Subject: Major Heading, and Subject.  Browsing through the terms here will give you an idea of some of the information available on your topic.  You may trying searching for “Treatments” and/or “Measurements” to help narrow your results.

If you have a question about whether a resource is considered scholarly, checkout this page on the website on Evaluating Resources: http://library.uhd.edu/journalquality .
