Now Available: Library Research Guide to Financial Ratios

All the resources mentioned below are available through on the Company and Industry Resources tab. First, to confirm good SIC and NAICS codes for Frankel Costume, look them up in Reference USA Business Database, which is listed under company resources. Their primary SIC is 5699 and their primary NAICS is 44819010.

The resources with industry financial ratios are D&B Key Business Ratios, eStatement Studies, and Mergent Horizon, all of which are listed under industry resources on the left column of the Company and Industry Resources tabbed page. In D&B, when you select it, it defaults you to SIC code 1. What you want to do is select the drop-down box for SIC code, then scroll down till you find 5699, which they call Miscellaneous Apparel & Accessory Stores (they abbreviate it.) Once you click on that, you’ll get all the industry ratios for the last three years.

If you’d like a source that provides the information in a different way, try eStatement Studies. It uses NAICS, and if you change the first search box in it to use NAICS, you can scroll down and find 448190, which they call Other Clothing Stores. It covers the years you want and presents the information differently. Both allow you to look at ranges of business size, if you want to select a sector that is closest to your business.

A third option is Mergent Horizon.  Once you're in Mergent Horizon, click on Sectors (at the top). In the Search Hierarchy box (on the upper left side of the page), select Sector Name. Then search for “apparel.” Click the appropriate link on the expanded hierarchy for the sector Frankel Costume would fall under, and then choose Overview under Sector Details on the far right side of the page. Click the >> button to expand a section in the report.
