Q

I would like to research the relationship between academic success and juvenile delinquency.

How would I type this into an Ebsco database to ensure most of my articles are relative to my topic? I've done research before and I've always noticed the Boolean search but have never used it. Will this help return more accurate results?

Answer

There are several EBSCOhost databases. The one most relevant to your topic is Psycinfo, so I decided to try that to see if I could find good search terms for you to use.

You can get to Psycinfo by going through the Psychology Research Guide at http://library.uhd.edu/psychology. There are other EBSCOhost databases listed there, too, which might be useful, like SOCIndex, Social Work Abstracts, and Academic Search Complete.

In my Psycinfo search, I found the following terms which, when combined, seem to get materials on your topic:

Juvenile delinquency

Academic achievement

If you type the first phrase into the first search box and the second phrase into the second search box, it will automatically do a Boolean search for you – it will use “and” to make sure that both concepts occur in the articles you retrieve. Boolean searching will, as you asked, give you more accurate, relevant results.

As you may know from having used EBSCOhost before, once you have your search results, you can check off options on the left of the results for “full text” and “scholarly (peer reviewed) journals.” This will further narrow your search to things where the entire article text is included in the database, and it is from a scholarly journal.
